The rainforests of the Amazon can be found in the east of the country. This area is called Oriente (Spanish: east). The almost 100,000 km² area is still sparsely populated to this day.
Just about 30 years ago, the Oriente was largely untapped and an inaccessible area. In which the indigenous peoples could live untouched by the influence of the outside world. Due to the rapid development of Ecuador, which is also attributable to oil, there are now well-developed roads and airfields that connect the villages and cities of the Oriente with the Sierra.
Large-scale monocultures, animal husbandry and the oil production are the main economic sectors in this region which have given to the population economic growth in the recent years.
In the rain forest of the Oriente still live some indigenous peoples: Kichwa (del Oriente), Cofán, Secoya, Siona, Shuar (formerly dreaded shrunken head hunters), Zápara, Quichua and the Achuar (close relatives of the Shuar). These indigenous communities are respected and protected in their culture and traditions. The shamans of the respective peoples are considered the doctors in their area. They have an excellent knowledge of the jungle flora and have a unique knowledge of the medicinal plants and their use.
There is more life on just 2 hectares of rainforest than all over North America combined. The Amazon has areas such as Cuyabeno, Yasuni and Podocarpus, which are rich in biodiversity and unique in the world.
What are you waiting for!? Come and discover the unique beauty of this wilderness!
